What is lowbrow art? While the term has come to be associated with a certain type of artist, and is often seen as the type of art seen in Juxtapoz magazine, lowbrow art can be many things and it embraces many things. It is a valid type of art - and it is sometimes seen as unsophisticated, crass, antisocial, sarcastic, and unrefined. And some lowbrow art is all those things.
But lowbrow artists are some of the most talented who have ever put pen to paper or brush to canvas - or whatever their medium of choice is. Lowbrow art isn't outsider or folk or somehow invalid as a genre: in fact it's more "real" than many works that famous art critics fawn over. I think it's interesting, fun, and in the varied forms it can take it's the most prevalent.
On this site you will see all sorts of art that might not fit into what you think of as "lowbrow". No matter: I promise you that all the art found on this site will meet two criteria. It will show originality and creativity and it will have been done by common men for the common man (or woman)! I have also attempted to showcase artforms and artists that influenced and shaped society. Some of the things now seen as ironic, campy, or part of a subculture were not originally intended to be received as such when they were created, but they've proven to be quite groundbreaking.
Here are some of the upcoming features on lowbrow.info:
The world of lowbrow art is full of variety and is one of the most interesting subjects to explore for anyone - especially people who appreciate creative visuals. For me, lowbrow might be common, unsophisticated, basic, and even inconsequential - but good art is good art. I hope you enjoy some of the things we gather and showcase here very soon.
